Η Ελλάδα τώρα είναι στα μέσα του φθινοπώρου και είναι η εποχή πού στο χωριό μας είναι γνωστή ως Ξύλευση. Κατά το παρελθόν όλοι στο χωριό μας πέρνανε τα πριόνια και μουλάρια τους και πηγέναν για το δάσος του χωριού. Εκεί υπό την παρακολουθηση των ανθρώπων του Δασαρχείου κόβαν το μερίδιο που είχε εντοπιστή και τούς είχε χορηγηθεί για καυσόξυλα του σπιτιού για τόν ερχόμενο χειμώνα. Τότε οι άνθρωποι πηγέναν με τους μουλάρια και τα γαϊδούρια τους ως ομάδες και κόβαν την κατανομή τους, φορτόναν τα ζώα τους και μεταφέραν τα φορτία τους στα σπιτια τους. Ήταν κάτι που το σύνολο του χωριού συμμετήχε και ήταν μια κοινωνική εκδήλωση, αν και ήταν πολύ κουραστικό είχε μια πολύ γιορτινή ατμόσφαιρα. Για τις επόμενες δύο εβδομάδες ακουγόταν τα πριόνια και τα τσεκούρια που έκοβαν και έσκιζαν την ξυλεία στο σωστό μέγεθος έτοιμη για το επιδέξιο στοίβαγμα σε ξηρό χώρο του σπιτιού και έτοιμη να να χρησιμοποιηθή στο τζάκι ή τήν ξύλοσομπα του κάθε σπιτιού. Σήμερα, οι άνθρωποι του Δασαρχείου εξακολουθούν να επιτρέπουν την Ξύλαση για ξύλα ως καύσιμα στα τζάκια και τίς ξυλόσομπες του χωριού. Τα πράγματα σήμερα δεν είναι ακριβώς τα ίδια όπως παλιά, τώρα δεν υπάρχουν γαϊδούρια και μουλάρια για τη μεταφορά της ξυλείας. (Νομίζω ότι υπάρχει μόνο ένας γάιδαρος στο χωριό) Σήμερα το ξύλο κόβεται από επαγγελματίες και το παραδίνουν σε κάθε σπίτι έναντι αμοιβής (περίπου 120 ευρώ). Το μέτρο τού δικαιούμενου φορτίου γιά καθε σπίτη μετριέται ακόμη με φορτόματα ( 10 φορτόματα για το κάθε σπίτη) αν και δεν υπάρχουν μουλάρια να τα κουβαλάνε.
Το πύρομα της φωτιας στό τζάκι στα μέσα τού χειμώνα εξακολουθεί να δίνει μεγάλη ευχαρίστηση ακούγοντας το κροτάλισμα τών ξύλων και νιώθωντας την φυσική θέρμη της φωτιάς.
It’s the middle of autumn in Greece and it’s that time of the year known in our village as the Xilefsi (the felling of timber season). In the past all the people in our village would get their saws and their mules and head for the village forest. There under the watching eye of the forestry people they would cut their allocated share of trees identified for firewood for the coming winter. In the old days people would team up and go with their mules and donkeys and as a team would cut their allocation, load them up and deliver the loads in the front yards of their houses. It was something that the whole village would partake and although a very tiring act it had a very festive atmosphere and was a social occasion. Following the delivery of the loads in the front yards for the next two weeks you would hear the sawing and the axe falling to cut and split the timbers to the correct size ready for the neat and masterful stacking in a dry place of the house ready to be used in the Fire place or the wood burner.
Today the forestry people still allocate timber to be cut for use as winter fuel in the fireplaces and the wood burners. Things today are not quite the same as there are no mules and donkeys to carry the timber. (I think there is only one donkey in the village) Today the timber is cut by professionals and gets delivered to each house for a fee (approx 120 Euro). They still measure the quantities by mule loads (Fortomata) and each house is allocated 10 fortomata. It is still great to watch the firewood in the tzaki (open fireplace) crackle and burn and feel the natural warmth of the timber burning.
