Παράδοση ξυλίας στο χωριό Καρυές......Delivery of Forest logs to the village of Karyes

It is October and the noise of Chain saws and tractors towing their trailers full of freshly cut timber is a constant and can be heard everywhere in the village where they deliver their loads to each of the Karyes households ready for cutting, splitting and stacking under cover in preparation for their winter use in the Fire place and or wood stove.
Naturally this was not always the mode of transport of the timber logs. In the older days each Karyes household was entitled to 10 mule loads of logs. The same volume of timber is also taken today with each household voucher.
Five decades ago there weren't any roads near the Arahovitan forest and access for the people and their mules was very hard. At the same time they did not have the luxury of using chain saws and each tree was chopped and felled by axe and or large hand saws. Similarly they did not have the ease of delivery available today.
The trees were cut within the dense forest, the trees were cleaned of their branches on the spot, then the cleaned logs were dragged by mules to the open where they were cut in appropriate lengths that were able to be loaded to the mules and or donkeys and they then would be taken to each of the households. A very hard and laborious effort by all concerned.
Today things are a bit easier but still require strong men to cut and load each trailer ready for delivery to the village households. In the video the hard work put in by the delivery people like Giannis Sioutos, Sotiris Harakas, Georgis Mentis and Dan Banica is clearly evident.
